Liverpool Public Library Community Connections

An engaging & innovative public library in Central New York where the community connects!
nypl:

Yesterday, the Library (which has now opened all but three of its branches - Van Cortlandt opened today) donated food that would have been served at its annual fundraising gala - canceled because of the storm - to about 600 New Yorkers reeling after Hurricane Sandy. Over a dozen NYPL volunteers spent the day serving Beef Bourguignon, Caesar salad, Apple Brown Betty, and more at three Staten Island locations, including The Staaten, Susan Wagner High School (pictured), and Ariana’s Grand in New Dorp, a catering hall damaged in the storm that has been transformed into a makeshift supply drop-off and pick-up location by the owners. The devastation in Staten Island and other parts of NYC is real - consider donating to the Red Cross to help.

Canning at home is making a huge comeback! Join teacher Christina Rode on Monday, July 30 from 7- 8:30pm for a spoonful of delicious canning tips and tricks, and herb demonstration in the Carman Community Room at Liverpool Public Library. There will also be taste test of canned vs store bought jam, pickles and applesauce! The program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. As we confront climate changes, food contamination scares, and an economic recession, there is a growing demand and desire to learn all about the ‘how and why’ of preserving food at home. This return to a more sustainable living allows us to live closer to the earth, eat locally, and create community.   In addition to conjuring fond memories of grandma for many people, nothing tastes better than home-canned foods, (we’ll be testing that theory with a taste test) and the homemade items make great gifts.      The program will be lead by Christina Rode, a Family & Consumer Science teacher in Baldwinsville, NY and one of the teachers  from iCan2012 - an all day canning seminar with five teachers, one goal: Reviving the lost art of home food preservation that will be taking place in Liverpool on August 11, 2012.  A discount coupon for the event will be available at this program. (ican2012.org )The workshop is being presented by Simply Home Arts, a new business started up by Nancy Fasoldt of Baldwinsville
